This paper is the result of a research on short letters and objects functioning as signals that abandoning mothers left with their children at the Rosario Orphanatory (Santa Fe, Argentina) for recognizing them later when they could be in conditions of recovering their sons and daughters. Most of them were poor Italian inmigrant women that faced their motherhood, paradoxically, in the scene of desertion.
