The following investigation analyzes the mechanical properties of tools coated by TiN-TiAIN multi layers using the PVD process and proves their economic savings when these are used as cutting tools. Therefore, it proposes the fact of mechanizing steel with the aim of reducing time and costs on the cutting process. This investigation analyzed two typical materials on cutting tools (High Speed Steel and Ceramics coated either with single layer or multi layers. Usually this type of coated is done on tungsten carbides. The result was a considerable increase on the life span of coated tools by TiN-TiAIN multi layers using the PVD process by up to 280% over those with an HSS. This implies economic savings of $ 859, 980 Mexican Pesos if it is considered that 73,332 tools were not used. Finally, failures on the tools were characterized and evidenced using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
