One of the goals of school mathematics is to generate a knowledge integrated into our lives. in view of this, we propose the theoretical perspective of the knowledge use in other scenarios as a significance basis for school mathematics. We analyze the case of the periodic property of the functions and its use in a science museum. In it, the use of such knowledge while working in an astronomical observation activity shows itself beyond a definition application; tools and arguments arise around a mathematical knowledge that can be useful. the results of the analyzes of extracurricular use of the periodicity that are reported contribute to a base of meanings for the periodic property and, with it, to a functional school mathematics for the life of the students.
