This article aims to analyze of what mathematics learning is constituted in mathematical modelling from the understanding of modeling as an organization of empirical situations. This issue has been analyzed based on the understanding of mathematics as a normative rule governed system. This view of mathematics is based on Ludwing Wittgenstein’s analysis of philosophical delimitations as well as Anna Sfard’s theoretical understanding about it. The discourses produced by a group of students and a teacher during the implementation of the modelling have been adopted as empirical material for the analysis of the theme. These data have been collected through observation method. The uses that the students and the teacher attributed the words allowed us to point out that the discursive modeling game is played under the rules instituted in the mathematical way of life developed in the school context.
