MENDONCA, Tânia Maria; PINTO, Sandra Maria; CAZORLA, Irene Mauricio  e  RIBEIRO, Eurivalda. Additive structures in the first grades of basic education: a diagnostic study in different contexts. Relime [online]. 2007, vol.10, n.2, pp.219-239. ISSN 2007-6819.

The objective of this investigation was to carry out the diagnostic study of the domain of additive structures in two distinct contexts, taking the Theory of Conceptual Fields as a frame of reference. A total of 1803 1st to 4th grade elementary students participated from public schools in the states of Sao Paolo and Bahia in Brazil. They were given a written test, composed of 12 problems related to addition and subtraction operations, which involved situations of composition, transformation and comparison, using small numerical values. A growing trend in the percentage of correct answers was observed according to grade level although, at differing levels and rate in student from both states. The main conclusion was that students, by the end of the fourth year, still showed difficulty in solving problems on more complex additive structures.
