PALMA CABRERA, Esperanza e CERVA CERNA, Daniela. The Importance of Women Institutions and Women Organization: The Observance of Gender Quotas in Mexican 2012 Federal Elections. Polít. gob [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.2, pp.291-325. ISSN 1665-2037.
As a result of the fulfillment of the gender quota for nominations to Congress in the 2012 Mexican federal elections, there is the highest number of elected women in the history of the country. The article analyzes political and institutional factors that explain this result, such as the pressure made by organized women from different parties and the decisive intervention of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary. Nevertheless, parties nominated women in a disproportionate manner in their lost districts showing that party leaderships responded more to the threat of sanction than to a change in values. Research is based upon journal sources and a database that relates female nominations with the types of districts.
