The Uruguayan philosopher Carlos Vaz Ferreira conducted a vast and ambitious philosophical work, where Lógica viva, first published in 1910, holds a privileged place. Briefly said, in that book he developed an original, subtle and suggestive analysis of fallacious reasoning. This article provides an interpretation of Vaz Ferreira’s critics of the traditional treatment of fallacies, and, based on that, it offers an unprejudiced analysis (in logical terms) of his valuable observations on argumentation.
