Resumen

ROQUE, Georges. Pigments, dyes, and shapes. Tóp. Sem [online]. 2012, n.28, pp.39-62. ISSN 2594-0619.

This essay studies the relationships between pigments, dyes and form (shapes). The first part aims for a critique of Hjelmslev’s notion, since pigments do not constitute -as he affirms- an amorphous and indeterminate matter, and in this sense, can’t be reduced to either substances or shapes; thus, it is quite important to be able to distinguish between pigments and dyes. Next, the relationship established between colors and dyes is clearly defined, and the semiotization of three categories -dye, clarity, saturation- becomes the subject of thorough analysis. Lastly, the author proposes a tentative classification of the different modes in which the relationships between pigments, dyes and shapes can be considered. The main goal of the article is to emphasize and stress the analysis of color in works of art.
