There has always been a close connection between writing poetry and translating it. It is the rule rather than the exception that major poets are themselves translators and often become deeply concerned with the theoretical issues raised by the task of translating poetry. In this article I will attempt to outline the theoretical standpoints concerning poetry translation of the two Greek Nobel laureates, Yorgos Seferis (1900-1971) and Odysseus Elytis (1911-1996), which are expressed mainly in the prefaces to their translations and in newspaper interviews, and discuss their views in the context of current thought concerning poetry translation. A further aspect of their theoretical concerns that I intend to examine is the extent to which, on the basis of their views and opinions concerning the translation of poetry, they influenced the foreign translators of their own poetry.
