Abstract

COBELO, Silvia. The translation of proverbs and the search for equivalence. Tóp. Sem [online]. 2011, n.25, pp.85-111. ISSN 2594-0619.

The translation of idiomatic expressions presents translators with a challenge. It consists of texts marked by expressions of folk wisdom of a particular culture that speaks its own lanhguaje and many times in defined historical periods. This article reviews several authors that discuss translating proverbs with emphasis on literary text. Some theoretical approaches are presented ans we point out the relationship of these with the concept of equivalence. In conclusion, we suggest a holistic approach for translating proverbs in literary text.
