Abstract

RAMON SANTIAGO, Pedro; AQUINO ZUNIGA, Silvia Patricia  and  ALEJANDRO JIMENEZ, Mariela. Evaluation of teaching competencies of high school teachers in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. Sinéctica [online]. 2017, n.48. ISSN 2007-7033.

This paper presents the final results of a research project conducted at the Colegio de Bachilleres de Tabasco (Tabasco High School). The purpose of the study was to analyze the performance of teachers after taking a competency-based training process provided through a diploma program run by the Secretariat of Public Education and the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education, within the framework of the Comprehensive Reform of High School Education in Mexico. The research paradigm employed was mixed. The investigation was performed under the two-stage model. The study was an exploratory descriptive type. The criterion for selecting teachers was through an intentional sample where 20 teachers participated. Also, the students of the interviewed teachers were surveyed (465). Two instruments were used for collecting information: a semi-structured interview and survey. It was found that the teachers have clear conceptualizations concerning the competency-based approach and its academic implications; however, in practice there are two competencies where they need to improve their level of mastery: planning the teaching and learning processes according to the competency approach and evaluation of the teaching and learning processes with a formative approach.

Keywords : high school education; educational quality; teacher competencies.
