Using a mixed methodology, we analyzed the association between recent immigration and school enrollment and age-grade gaps of migrant children between 8 and 15 years old from the United States to Baja California, as well as the experience of these children on their insertion in Mexican schools. The quantitative analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and a multinomial logistic model, based on the 2010 Population Census Microdata, which indicated that being a recent migrant considerably increases the risk of school non-enrollment and backwardness in Baja California. The qualitative analysis was based on a series of semi-structured interviews in Tijuana, Baja California, in order to understand the experience of school insertion. This analysis revealed that school continuity and permanence of migrant children coming from the United States has a close relationship with their socioeconomic status, therefore, with the economic, social and cultural capitals that families can use in favor of their children.
