Abstract

LOPEZ RIVAS, Griselda  and  LIMON AGUIRRE, Fernando. Cultural knowledge and formal education among the Maya-chuj. Moving towards a true intercultural education. Sinéctica [online]. 2016, n.47. ISSN 2007-7033.

The historical condition of social and educational injustice suffered by indige-nous peoples has not been substantively modified by the implementation of the recent reforms to the politics of intercultural education, even where these same reforms have resulted from the struggles of these same peoples to realize their rights. The research which forms the basis for this article was undertaken in communities of Maya-chuj descent and in logic of participant research and from an intercultural critical perspective. We address this central tension and enquire as to the relevancy or not of the incorporaron of cultural knowledge within formal education.

The analysis emphasizes the critical and hopeful position of chuj people; in overcoming their distrust and opposition to the hegemonic system, this same position looks to establish educational strategies based on their cultural resources. In this way, the Maya-chuj anticipates a truly intercultural education which springs from a respectful treatment of their culture and a truthful account of their history.

Keywords : Mayan-chuj people; interculturality; indigenous educational; participant research.
