Abstract

GUDINO PAREDES, Sandra; LOZANO MARTINEZ, Fernando  and  FERNANDEZ CARDENAS, Juan Manuel. Uso de Facebook para la socialización del aprendizaje de una segunda lengua en nivel medio superior. Sinéctica [online]. 2014, n.42, pp.1-16. ISSN 2007-7033.

This study analyzed the socialization practice of a second language within a virtual community hosted on Facebook. The aim of the intervention was to go beyond conventional practices of English learning and socialization framed in a technological and humanistic context. The research question was: How do the first grade high school students act when communicating each other in English as a second language inside a virtual community located in Facebook? The methodology was a mixed approach that includes quantitative techniques: an initial questionnaire as well as qualitative ones: semi structured interview and conversation analysis. The results show that practicing a second language mediated by technology in a virtual knowledge community promotes socialization, communication and interaction between students and teacher.

Keywords : virtual communities; Facebook; English language learning; technological mediation.
