This article has the objective of presenting the results of an investigation on knowledge construction and information management processes, in and during the process of training thesis writers coursing a graduate degree on education given on a distance learning modality. An investigation was done with the study of eight cases, to inquire the processes in the formation of researchers. Four units of analysis were used: abilities, interactions, information management and construction of knowledge. Findings indicated the influence of two types of factors: institutional (influencing the vision on educational research, the structure of the project realization process, previous formation on research, communication mediums between the thesis writer, the tutor, and technical support) and personal (with incidence on the abilities of the thesis writer, the interaction, feedback, previous experience, personality and the use of organizers).
