Abstract

AVILA-EGGLETON, Marcela  and  GUTIERREZ SANCHEZ, Héctor. The role of the space in explaining abstentionism. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2017, vol.24, n.69, pp.115-154. ISSN 1665-0565.

This paper analyzes the role of space in the understanding of abstentionism in the elections for federal deputies between 1994 and 2012. First, the Moran Index is used and the spatial independence hypothesis is refuted; then spatial regression techniques are used to show how the inclusion of space can alter statistical relations between abstention and independent variables; finally, electoral cartography is used to show possible case of studies that lead to new theories that could later diminish the relevance of the spatial factor.

Keywords : abstentionism; elections; spatial statistics; electoral geography; turnout.
