Abstract

TORRICO TERAN, Mario Alejandro. Electoral Governance and Public Trust in Estado de Mexico. Espiral (Guadalaj.) [online]. 2015, vol.22, n.62, pp.101-138. ISSN 1665-0565.

By developing a case study that examines the legal and electoral framework, the electoral bodies design and the conditions of political pluralism in the State of Mexico, this article shows that favorable conditions of electoral governance do not necessarily guarantee public confidence in the performance of these bodies and the overall credibility of the election results, which could affect the legitimacy of the elected political authorities (which is unexpected by the findings of the literature). From these findings we recommend that qualitative research should be done to disclose the informal relations of political parties, with the aim of knowing why the incentives that electoral rules and institutional design should generate are not producing the expected results in terms ofthe voters' confidence in elections.

Keywords : Electoral governance; State of Mexico; electoral authorities; confidence; elections.
