Resumen

DIEZ-MARTINEZ, Evelyn. Socioeconomic and Financial Literacy in 21st Century Mexican Adolescents. REDIE [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.2, pp.130-143. ISSN 1607-4041.

Psychology has contributed to our understanding of how economic and financial concepts are assimilated during the stages of development, but in Mexico, few studies have been carried out with regard to the acquisition of this knowledge. In educational terms, this falls under "economic literacy". However, this literacy has not been included in formal curricula for any level of education despite currently being considered an essential competency for adolescents in the 21st century. This study analyzed understanding of these literacy concepts in 245 adolescents (from 12 to 16 years of age) in public and private schools. A questionnaire was used with questions about remuneration for work, profit, interest on loans, and supply and demand. The results show that even older subjects do not have an adequate understanding of the concepts reviewed. The results are discussed from the perspective of developmental psychology of socioeconomic thought.
