The quality evaluation process in the Spanish universities, which has been going since the beginning of 90's it has generated indisputable advantages. Nevertheless, a whole series of problems affecting the process has been detected, whose consequences are hard to predict a priori. The paper examines some of the detected weaknesses, their causes and consequences; and a number of suggestions are given in order to improve the quality evaluation process in those institutions.
