Abstract

MORALES MARTIN, Juan Jesús. José Medina Echavarría. A Mexican Sociology Classic. Desacatos [online]. 2010, n.33, pp.133-150. ISSN 2448-5144.

This article seeks to describe José Medina Echavarría's intellectual stay in Mexico, between 1939 and 1946. It is specially centred on evaluating his contribution to the emergent institutionalization process of Mexican sociology, as a pioneer of this scientific field, given his work at several institutions such as the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (National Autonomous University of Mexico), the Fondo de Cultura Económica (Economic Culture Fund), or the pioneering Centro de Estudios Sociales (Centre for Social Studies) of El Colegio de México. This biographic stage of the Spaniard exiled is characterized by a disseminating and theoretical style that allows considering him a classic in Mexican sociology, for opening paths and perspectives.

Keywords : José Medina Echavarría; history; Mexican sociology; Spanish sociology; sociology of sociology; sociological theory.
