Resumen
PENICHE RIVERO, Piedad. Opposing Capitalism in Yucatan: the Rebel's Cause during the Caste Wars (1847-1850). Desacatos [online]. 2002, n.9, pp.148-160. ISSN 2448-5144.
The purpose of this essay is to show that the rebels' cause during the Caste Wars in Yucatan (1847-1901) coincides with that of the so-called "hidden populations" -Maya-speaking groups scattered throughout the region-, which objectect to the payment ofcivil and church taxes. Despite this coinciding, these "populations" have not been considered part of the enormous armed conflict we know as the Caste Wars. The author believes that, due to their refusal to pay taxes and their segregation from society -and particularly from the Catholic church-, as well as their desire for autonomy, the "hidden populations" had a revolutionary potential which could well have swelled the ranks of the Maya rebels.
