Abstract

MOLINA MENDEZ, Francisco Javier. Oxygen carriers in cardiac surgery. Arch. Cardiol. Méx. [online]. 2006, vol.76, suppl.2, pp.100-106. ISSN 1665-1731.

Artificial oxygen carriers may be grouped into two categories: Hemoglobin-based solutions and perfluoro-chemical based emulsions. Allogenic erythrocyte transfusions represent a limited resource and are associated with adverse events such as acute transfusion reactions, transmission of infectious diseases, immuno-suppression and postoperative infections. Although "artificial blood" is not yet a clinical reality, several temporary "artificial oxygen carriers" are in late stage clinical development.

Keywords : Cardiac surgery; Oxygen carriers; Artificial blood.
