Abstract

ALFARO-BERACOECHEA, Laura Nadhielii et al. What motivated women to march in 8M? Analysis from the theory of collective action frames. La ventana [online]. 2022, vol.6, n.55, pp.246-277.  Epub Feb 21, 2022. ISSN 1405-9436.  https://doi.org/10.32870/lv.v6i55.7330.

This work emerges from the international study on “collective effervescence, self-transcendence and gender differences in social well-being, during the March 8th demonstrations”. The purpose of this study was to identify to what extent participation in the March 8th protest in Guadalajara could be explained by variables framed in the theory of Collective Action Frameworks (MAC), particularly negative emotions, situated social identity, solidarity, moral obligation, and collective efficacy. The sample comprised 353 women between 18 and 63 years old who answered the survey between March 8th and 13th in 2020, using a virtual form. The results show significant differences in participants and non-participants in the manifestation according to the observed variables. The variables that predicted participation were mainly moral obligation, negative emotions, and positively situated social identity, and inverse collective efficacy. In conclusion, it is the elements related to collective identity, as well as outrage at the situation of women, which motivated the protesters, even when no social change was foreseen.

Keywords : women; collective action; negative emotions; social identity; collective efficacy.
