This article investigates the gender and power relations existing in violence against women in the Sertão do Brasil. The article was based on the theoretical contributions on gender and power relations, as well as national documents and surveys on violence against women. On the loch of the Sertão, we point out the singularity through two important phenomens: coronelismo and cangaço. From the methodological point of view, it is a case study about the reality of the Sertão, with a field research, based on a qualitative approach. Interviews were conducted with women in situations of violence during the year 2014. We conclude that, despite understanding the aggressions they suffer as a situation of violence, women minimize the severity. Even though women's participation in the public space has not yet been reconfigured in terms of gender and power in the private sphere, while the culture that imposes the subordination of women to men.
