MORENO SOSA, Maribel. Trayectorias educativas de las mujeres universitarias: efecto de los roles de género en el retorno al sistema educativo. La ventana [online]. 2018, vol.5, n.47, pp.139-176. ISSN 1405-9436.
The aim of the present research is to identify different effects of parenthood on women’s and men’s educational trajectories. The main hypothesis considers that professional women delay postgraduate education due to activities associated to the women’s maternal role. The data is drawn from the Encuesta Multipropósito de Bogota (emb) (Multipurpose Survey Bogota) 2014. Logistic regression models were executed including main factors associated to the children’s care, marital status and financial situation to create a final model putting together all main variables. Results show a higher probability of not carring out postgraduate courses for the women who have fewer children that also spend more time caring and at work, have working couples, couples with college or less educated and who spend time caring for the children. For men, the most relevant variables were less investment of time caring for children, working intensity time and investing more time in this activity. Results suggest that gender gap related to parenting persists and reinforces the higher participation of women in these activities, assuming the costs of role conflict inside home, which affects the decision of educational return.
