Abstract
ISSN 1405-9436.
This paper presents a gender-focused study which analyses women's participation in community water management committees in the Rio Sabinal watershed and Cañón del Sumidero in Chiapas, Mexico. We found that the division between public-male and private-female limited women's participation in community water management committees. The variance analysis showed that in communities with water management committees where the average level of education of women was low or the average level of education of men was high, there were higher rates of female participation. We also found that female participation is only possible when water management committee activities are considered of low prestige or undesirable among men, due to the voluntary nature of the work. Despite this, we propose that water management by women is necessary in order to achieve both true gender equity and sustainable development.
