The theoretical reflection takes elements of masculinity studies, and from a view from the culture and discourses on the subjectivities and current links. In this context the family as a construct and as material takes great relevance. In this case the questions were aimed at knowing the construction of masculinities of male subjects who are currently separated but maintain a relationship with their children. Depth interviews were conducted in 10 Chilean men and then the technique of discourse analysis was applied. The results and major conclusions suggest that being male is a place of tension, a situation that becomes more complex when these men are outside the family. The nuclear family imaginary continues to operate on them and hinders their own appreciation of their new ties and experiences.
