This paper reflects on the ways middle and upper class women in Guadalajara, Jalisco, make a home for their families and, in so doing, create their own gender identities. Instead of stressing how discourses and ideologies shape the home, this paper underscores the relevance of spatial practices. Thus, it shown how women find their gender identities not through the abstract logic of the patriarchy or the private/public divide, but by creating and experiencing the gendered spaces that constitute the home.
