Although pornography consumption is an issue that has been explored to a certain extent in social research about sexuality, its role in the production and reproduction of sexual roles has so far been neglected. This paper presents a historical and conceptual approach to the pornography market and its "educational" efficacy in the learning process of gender roles by adolescents. It also discusses some criticism for and against pornography, ranging from an abolitionist stance to practices which aim at a semantic re-appropriation in order to respond to/generate different tastes, or those who even propose using pornography as an instrument to subversively resignify gender roles.
