GARIBAY OROZCO, Claudio  e  BALZARETTI CAMACHO, Alejandra. Goldcorp and the Negative Reciprocity in the Mining Landscape of Mezcala, Guerrero. Desacatos [online]. 2009, n.30, pp. 91-110. ISSN 1405-9274.

This paper shows how the transnational corporation Goldcorp Inc., in order to profit from open sky gold mining in the collective lands of three Mexican peasant communities, relates with the local societies based on the principle of negative reciprocity, understood as "attempting, with impunity, to obtain something without giving anything in exchange". It also illustrates the procedures used by Goldcorp to obtain control of the gold source, achieve the political entrapment of the communities, and impose a micro-regional dominance regime based on coercion. Finally, it analyzes the local social reactions to negative reciprocity, mostly demonstrations and road-blocking protests, which renew local discourses about "justice" and propose a moral renegotiation between the corporation and the local community.

Palavras-chave : negative reciprocity; transnational mining corporation; distributive justice; peasant community; mining social landscape; community entrapment.
