Abstract

ERVILHA, Gabriel Teixeira  and  LIMA, João Eustáquio De. An econometric method to identify the determinants of municipal crime: the application in Minas Gerais, Brazil (2000-2014). Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.59, pp.1059-1086. ISSN 2448-6183.  https://doi.org/10.22136/est20191250.

This paper seeks to analyze, through the panel data methodology, if the municipal heterogeneities in Minas Gerais exert influence on the different crime indicators presented by Minas Gerais’ municipalities in the 2000 to 2014. Despite some oppobsition to the one referenced in the literature, the results presented are important because they suggest that policies to combat different crime should be combined with other public policies, besides considering the age group and the socioeconomic vulnerability of the population. Thus, more effective than the ostensive combat between police officers and criminals is the combat to the incentives generated by the criminality.

Keywords : economy of crime; minas gerais; panel data; public policy; municipal crime.
