Argentina lacks environmental indices at national scale. To begin to fill this gap, this paper presents an environmental quality index for the departments comprised in the north eastern provinces of Argentina. It is composed of twenty-three variables grouped into three dimensions known as: a) nature-based recreation resources; b) socially constructed resources; and, c) environmental problems. A proper consideration of environment aline quality provides elements to formulate appropriate policies to mitigate these problems.
