Abstract

CRUZ-GONZALEZ, Francisco Javier de la et al. Socioeconomic analysis of giant squid fishery in Guaymas, Sonora. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2011, vol.11, n.37, pp.645-666. ISSN 2448-6183.

The present article provides a socio-economic analysis of the giant squid fishery in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. A database was developed with information about the industry and data on the main socioeconomic conditions of the workers of this industry obtained through direct survey questionnaires. The results show that the fishery has had an important role in the productive sector of the region. The increase in giant squid catches in recent years has enabled the growth of this fishery, not its development however. This paper highlights the necessity to restructure management policies to promote the integral use of this resource.

Keywords : giant squid; socioeconomic; fishery.
