Abstract
GERRITSEN, Peter R. W.; ORTIZ-ARRONA, Claudia and GONZALEZ-FIGUEROA, Rodolfo. Popular usage, tradition and exploitation of reed: a case study in the south coast of Jalisco, Mexico. Econ. soc. territ [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.29, pp.185-207. ISSN 2448-6183.
In this article we present a sociologic study focussed on the exploitation of reed (phragmites autralis) in western Mexico. Reed has been used for different purposes and therefore not only does it represent a source of income, but it is also a factor of family union. We describe the way in which this resource is managed, including social agreements and their evolution in the region; we also address the problems faced by this population. We conclude that reed is a viable alternative to the current development model, making use of the endogenous rural development principles, in particular the principle of multi-functionality.
