Abstract

HERNANDEZ-FRANCISCO, Antonio; LOPEZ-LARA, Teresa; HERNANDEZ-ZARAGOZA, Juan Bosco  and  HORTA-RANGEL, Jaime Moisés. Natural zeolite from Puebla as a soil treatment of Querétaro region in roadways: Effects on its plastic behavior. Ing. invest. y tecnol. [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.3.  Epub Aug 03, 2021. Natural pozzolans are well-known for being used as natural pozzolanic material for a long time, being one of the main components in the manufacture of high-resistence concrete. As a construction material, its use has been investigated by many researchers in soil stabilization, requiring the addition of lime and water to start the pozzolanic activity and subsequently, the cementitious crystal formation. However, factors such as soil pH, cation exchange, particle size, natural moisture and soil mineralogy are points that affect the amount of free lime that can be combined with zeolite can be combined and perform ist activity. As a consequence, the stabilization of some soils requires the use of more complex chemical products, whose obtention involves several enviromental and economic problems. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the different amounts of zeolite in the stabilization of an expansive soil (CH) using lime as a pozzolanic activator, evaluating the index properties of the stabilized soil and the relationship of the percentages of the involved materials. The results indicate that the optimal dosage of lime-zeolite is 10-6 % respectively, obtaining a Liquid Limit (LL) = 55.25 %, Plastic Limit (PL)= 46.1 % and Shrinkage Limit (SL)= 31.86 %, with an average decrease of Plastic Index(PI) of 33 % compared with the values of the natural soil. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the use of lime and natural zeolite is favorable in the stabilization of clays from the Queretaro region.
