MENDOZA-BRAVO, Ivan; ARIAS-GONZALEZ, José Antonio; VILLALOBOS-VERA, Doris Ivette e RUIZ-REYES, Héctor. Metallurgical Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Mini-Implants as a Temporary Anchorage Device in Orthodontics Applications. Ing. invest. y tecnol. [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp.21-28. ISSN 2594-0732.
The application of mini implants as a temporary anchorage device in orthodontics is a new technique that allows the movement of teeth in an efficient and predictable way. Although they have started to be used in Germany, Japan and South Korea, there is still the need to analyze and diffuse the advantages this procedure can offer over the traditional techniques. The objective of this research work was to analyze the integrity of Ti-6Al-4V mini implants temporary employed for 4 months on three patients as an anchorage device. The mini implants were analyzed by means of electron scanning microscopy in order to determine superficial and microstructural changes as well as the interaction with human tissue. Results showed the presence of wear on the thread zone caused during the insertion into the maxilar bone. The adherence of organic tissue was also observed on two mini impplants.
