SOBRINO-FIGUEROA, Luis Jaime. Economic growth and demographic dynamics in Mexican cities, 1980-2020. Pap. poblac [online]. 2020, vol.26, n.104, pp.11-50.  Epub 02-Jun-2021. ISSN 2448-7147.  https://doi.org/10.22185/24487147.2020.104.11.

A country's economic growth is the result of developments in its territories, especially cities. There are differences in the economic performance of cities and these are due to internal factors, country conditions and the global context. The purpose of this article is to study the geography of the population and economic activities in Mexico, in particular the explanatory factors of major cities growth in Mexico in the period 1980-2020. To fulfill this purpose, the National Population Council uses demographic information, provided by the population and housing censuses of 1980 and 2000, as well as municipal population projections by 2020. In addition, an estimate of gross domestic product (GDP) of 1980, 1998 and 2018 is made for cities that had 100 thousand and more inhabitants in 2010, and uses information to approach the explanatory factors of economic growth that commonly appear in the literature. Some of the main findings show that local economic change was explained by population dynamism and other demographic variables. There was also evidence of convergence in economic growth between study cities.
