Resumen

MARTINEZ VELASCO, Germán; LOPEZ OCHOA, María Sonia; ALVAREZ GORDILLO, Guadalupe  y  SCHMOOK, Birgit. Disasters, internal displacement and labor migration in the Sierra region of Chiapas. Pap. poblac [online]. 2016, vol.22, n.87, pp.201-232. ISSN 2448-7147.

Derived from a global climate change scenario, hurricane Stan (2005) severely impacted the Sierra Region of Chiapas and caused one of the largest internal displacements of people never seen before in the state. A portion of the population suffered a sudden relocation to nearby places amid improvised actions by public agencies, disregarding the international protocols on the subject. To analyze the process of relocation and its consequences, we conducted a study in two communities of displaced people called "fraccionamientos". In the new places of settlement, livelihoods were more precarious than those of previous places of residence, these is why displaced people have been unable to access to satisfiers of general welfare and maintain the usual international migration pattern they had before displacement. Instead, current conditions have led to a commuter type migration, a kind of migration that the same population had surpassed decades ago.
