ANANOS BEDRINANA, Fanny T.  e  JIMENEZ BAUTISTA, Francisco. Population and vulnerable social contexts: gender and prison uncovered. Pap. poblac [online]. 2016, vol.22, n.87, pp.63-101. ISSN 2448-7147.

This article attempts to study and analyze the reality of the international prison population, approaching Europe and Latin America as well as the Spanish context. Results of a Spanish national research to 538 women prisoners (15 por ciento of the female prison population) are presented in order to determine their sociodemographic characteristics, vulnerable situations and different risk factors, marginalization, social exclusion, and poverty, which involve people before entering prison and their relationship to crime. The results make visible the massive prison population dimension in the international sphere, from global population to female population in addition to personal traits and socio-contextual effects that denote the direct and indirect influences of different types of exclusions and experiences, in which the problems, weaknesses, and needs, are able to influence the commission of crime. Facts and consequences in the case of women have major and serious repercussions. These data demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the prison system as a deterrent and preventive of crime also leads to questioning the parameters of social alternatives (political, economic, and cultural), and educational action oriented towards the rehabilitation and reintegration of this collective.
