Resumen

PERPETUO, Ignez H. O.  y  RODRIGUEZ WONG, Laura. Towards a replacement rate: programs and policies which affected the fertility course in Brazil. Pap. poblac [online]. 2006, vol.12, n.47, pp.243-275. ISSN 2448-7147.

Fertility in Brazil has diminished until reaching replacement levels by 2005. It was a dramatic fall caused by a complex symbiosis of institutional transformations, in which the Brazilian State had, direct or indirectly, an important role. The paper describes the evolution of the Brazilian fertility and discusses the influence of the State in these changes. A number of correlated findings are mentioned considering two aspects. On one hand, the fertility trend, incorporating new evidences that emerged by using a cohort approach instead of the longitudinal data; in doing so, the more recent data show a generalized downwards trend. On the other hand, it describes the influence of the State over the transition period in aspects like changes in reproductive preferences, demand for fertility regulation and contraception methods supply.

Palabras llave : demographic transition; fecundity; population policy; reproductive preferences; contraception; Brazil.
