Abstract
ANTUNES PAES, Neir. The impact on Brazilian elderly of accident and violent mortality. Pap. poblac [online]. 2003, vol.9, n.37, pp.193-218. ISSN 2448-7147.
The alarming levels of deaths by violence and accidents in the Brazilian population since the 80's motivated this research on the impact of this mortality cause in the elderly population. Therefore, this paper estimates the tendencies and differentials of the Brazilian elderly mortality by external causes for all States, as well as evaluates its associations with social and economic indicators from 1980 to 1995. Generalized lineal models were used to analyze the association between mortality rates and social and economic indicators. The tendencies suggested that the mortality rates by external causes for the elderly did not follow the alarming levels of adult mortality. For the former, the levels ascended slightly for men and diminished for women. The traffic accidents and accidental falls were the most important causes. The multivariate analysis suggests a marked geographical variation in the tendencies of mortality rates that reflects social and economic differences among the Brazilian States.
