NEGRETE SALAS, María Eugenia. Aging in Mexico City: evolution and spatial distribution patterns (1970-2000). Pap. poblac [online]. 2003, vol.9, n.37, pp.107-127. ISSN 2448-7147.

This article explores the interaction between the urbanization, metropolization and aging processes in Mexico City over the past three decades. After showing the existence of significant geographical differences in the concentration of the elderly, the demographic factors determining the spatial evolution of the aging process are described -i.e. "aging in place" and the "elderly migration". The spatial patterns reveal deep intra-urban differences in the aging process of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area. These patterns are considered in their relation to the metropolitan evolution between 1940 and 2000. The importance of the migration process and its effect over time in the generation of the heterogeneous spatial distribution of the elderly becomes evident as population migration affects the age structure in both place of origin and destination.
