The following article is a revision and a follow up of the discussions of the First and Second World Assembly on Ageing. In order to define the role of demography and gerontology in social policy planning, the article presents the ideological and political stands on ageing of different countries. In the last years, ageing population topics have diversified. This diversification is in part due to the different needs and motivations in less developed countries and developed countries. Finally, the article identifies the challenges that demography, as a discipline, has in the ageing population topic and discusses a differential perspective on the subject.
