The paper describes some of the issues being debated in the current literature on the role of social institutions in decision-making regarding fertility and contraception. It puts forward some of the terms of the debate on reproductive rights and the role of public health institutions. It also analyzes the role of NGO in the promotion of the right to decide, as well as the importance of the family and kinship links in reproductive decision making. The article ends by describing the potential of schools in the transformation of authoritarian gender and generational relations and the inertias that prevent the development of personal autonomy and critical reflection.
