This study is centered on the formation of married couples and childbearing among young individuals during the late 20^th century. The main concern is to start documenting, from this moment, progress in the dissociation among sexual, married and reproductive life, determining changes in the characteristics of individuals who enter consensual unions, and analysing the increase of divorces and separations and of "remarriages". This paper presents up-dated nuptiality trends that stem from an analysis of the different data sources, population structures by marital status, the evolution of the intensity of unions, and ages at the first union by type of union. Finally, the paper addresses the dissolution of unions and the precocity of childbearing. Thus, some arguments are obtained that support, although still insufficiently, the advance of what some authors have called the second demographic transition.
