Supported in sources written during and after the construction of the Panama Canal (1904-1914), this article examines the form in which the USA citizens conceptualized, the tropical of Panama and the way in which this conceptualization is oriented to the policy, in special the sanitary part, during the period of construction of the channel. Due to the tropical diseases, specially the "malaria" and the yellow fever, they have occupied a central place in the way to conceive the tropical on the part of the USA citizens, the objective of this work is to show that the problems of diseases in Panama were the result of complex environmental and social interactions, and not a mere natural terrain feature of the tropical.
