VILLA LEVER, Lorenza. The Configuration of Higher Education Classifies University Students and Affects their Educational Opportunitiess. RMIE [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.81, pp.615-631. ISSN 1405-6666.

Inequalities in higher education are not an isolated problem of institutions or individuals. They are structural and take place at the global, regional, and local levels. The horizontal stratification of universities produces asymmetrical spaces that promote the unequal inclusion of men and women with different social positions, because such spaces offer differentiated structures and intervene in the reproduction and accentuation of social and gender inequalities. This article presents the asymmetries among regions and gender, and uses empirical research to address the national and international levels. The objective is to reveal the close relationship between variables such as sub-discipline, university space, social level, and gender. The conclusion is that the configuration of the field of higher education is hierarchized and fragmented by networks that are segmented by social level and gender. As a result, asymmetrical university spaces function as a mechanism that reproduces social and gender inequalities.
