Based on the school effectiveness of high schools, this article explores variables related to students’ educational aspirations and perception of school climate. The results from the national higher education entrance examination (EXANI II) were used to establish school effectiveness; results were contextualized by socioeconomic level, by means of hierarchical linear modeling. The participants were 9,432 students in their final year of 119 high schools in the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico. The variables employed were from the test’s context questionnaire. The results show that school effectiveness determines student perception, beyond the individual socioeconomic context. Most students from highly effective schools aspire to a graduate degree and report establishing priorities, planning activities, dedicating themselves to learning, and collaborating with classmates. School effectiveness strengthens the school’s role in the aspirations and formative experiences of students.
