Abstract

MELLADO, Lucía; MONTANA, Juan Luis de la; LUENGO, María Rosa  and  BERMEJO, María Luisa. Evolution of the Personal Teaching Models of Prospective Educational Counselors for Secondary School, as Expressed through Metaphors. RMIE [online]. 2017, vol.22, n.73, pp.367-398. ISSN 1405-6666.

By means of a questionnaire of open-ended questions, this study analyzes the evolution of the personal metaphors of a sample of twenty-four prospective teachers specializing in educational counseling in a master’s program in secondary school education, during the 2012-2013 school year. Four categories were used for the analysis: transmissive/behavioral, cognitive/constructivist, situated, and self-referenced. The results indicate that most of the participants were able to conceptualize their roles in terms of metaphors. A comparison of the metaphors before and after the teachers’ practicum at secondary schools showed that most of the teachers did not change the metaphors or associated models that were established at the beginning of their master’s program. Only five revealed a progressive change in their metaphors, and two showed a regressive change; one participant demonstrated contradictions and could not be classified within a defined model.

Keywords : teacher education; secondary education; teacher conceptions; teaching styles; educational counseling.
