Abstract

RAZO PEREZ, Ana Elizabeth. Time to Learn: Taking Advantage of Classroom Periods. RMIE [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.69, pp.611-639. ISSN 1405-6666.

Time at school and time for learning are not synonymous. However, we know little about the gap between them. From a descriptive/exploratory focus, this study attempts to discover, through a combination of methods, the use and organization of time in Mexico's elementary schools, the activities teachers develop, and the factors that help to explain the organization of time. To this aim, structured, videotaped observation of classroom practices was used. The results show that one-half of classroom time is dedication to educational interactions between teachers and students. Thus the study of time in the classroom goes beyond the duration of the school day. The emphasis is on the periods that students are involved in significant learning experiences at school.

Keywords : use of time; observation; basic education; school organization; video; Mexico.
